Underneath the big umbrella of metal, it is debatable that doom is one of the most expansive with many different styles and sounds coming under that doom banner. One such band are Ireland’s Dread Sovereign who have just released their third album ‘Alchemical Warfare’.

Much like Dread Sovereign’s earlier releases, ‘Alchemical Warfare’ sticks to its tried and tested formula and when you think about it, there is much need for a change. Dread Sovereign have got themselves a nice little sound niche sound going on which sets me apart from a lot of doom. What the band offer with this latest album is an overarching doom sound, one that it not overpowering and instead of just running with it, they attach touches of classic heavy metal and NWOBHM into the mix that makes the listener sit up and take some real note. This means that tracks such as ‘Her Master’s Voice’ and ‘Ruin upon the Temple Mount’ have all the appeal of the likes of Saint Vitus and Messiah era Candlemass with their powerful memorable melodies. Furthermore, the closing cover of ‘You Don’t Move Me (I Don’t Give a Fuck)’ may well be from the Bathory discography, but it is given a large new lease of life with an undercurrent of raucous long haired punks with its touches of Venom and Motörhead. It also may be a bold statement to open an album with a ten minute slab, but ‘Alchemical Warfare’ takes this into its stride and owns it, setting the scene for an excellent album.

Dread Sovereign have released not only the album of their career, but also, do not be surprised if this album is floating around in many best album of the year lists and if it’s not, it really isn’t worth the paper its printed on.

Dread Sovereign have released debatably the album of their career
