KINGS WINTER | Questions on the Go + Giveaway

Modern Heavy Metal with a melodic edge reminiscent of Scandinavian Melodic Death Metal bands and a lead-singer with a distinct rockvoice, this might be the best description for the sound that KINGS WINTER have created for their new album “Edge Of Existence”. Founded in 2018 by married couple Jule and Tobias Dahs and named after their German hometown “Königswinter”, the duo quickly released their debut EP “Froging The Cataclysm” in 2019. Fueled by the great feedback of critics and fans alike for the record and with all other activities on hold due to the ongoing pandemic, the couple used 2020 to begin work on their first full length release, which was once again recorded and mixed by guitarist Tobias in his homestudio and will see the light of day in May 2021.

Please describe the band in a single sentence.

A crazy mix between classic Heavy Metal and Scandinavian Melodic Death Metal with a modern edge, that delivers everything from heavy riffs to catchy melodies.

What’s your latest project and what are you working on right now?

Our latest project is our debut album “Edge Of Existence”, which was released on May 1st and is now available on all streaming platforms and our Bandcamp page. Apart from that we are currently working on a secret release, that will see the light of day later this year. It will be something very different for Kings Winter, but we still want to keep it a secret as best as we can. But there is more music coming your way this year!

How do you want people to feel when they listen to your music?

I hope that the music will not make people feel only one special way, but it might rather be a companion through different emotions.

In general, I hope that it does the same thing that music does to me: Help lift my spirits and make even a bad day better.

Major influences: Who put you on this path?

To me it has been the great Keith Richards, who made me want to become a guitar player in the first place, and mainly Alexi Laiho (R.I.P Wildchild!), who fueled my interest for metal and technical guitar playing. For Jule it was Bonnie Tyler, who woke her interest towards singing at a very young age and who is still a major influence on her vocals, especially with her very charismatic rock voice.

If you had to flee the country as a band, where would you choose to live?

It would probably have to be Scotland. Jule and myself visited the Highlands for the first time in 2017 and fell in love with the people, the history and obviously the great landscape. The weather could be better there, but if we had to leave Germany our road would lead to the Highlands.

What’s the ‘wow factor’ that makes YOU decide which songs to keep, record and release?

Really hard to describe – it’s just this euphoric feeling that you get when you listen to a riff or a melody for the first time. Creating such a moment gives me the biggest rush and I try to chase this feeling with all the ideas that I work on until a song is ready.  If it gives me goosebumps while listening to it or gets me bang my head, it will end up on one of our records.

What’s the most hilarious band memory you can think of?

Probably the day we created the band name. We were fooling around with translating local tourist attractions from German to English and at one point came up with “Kings Winter” for the name of our hometown Königswinter. We were laughing about it at first, but the more we thought about it, the more the name made perfect sense for our new project.

What would be the title of the band’s biography?

From the top of my head it would be “Married by music”.

Music and our activities in bands brought Jule and me together, back then we were playing in different bands in 2013 and now we are married and have also founded our own project. So yeah, music is a very integral part of our life and our relationship.

What’s the next milestone you’d like to achieve as a band?

The next thing on our agenda is bringing Kings Winter to the stage. We’ve just assembled new members for our live band and are basically only waiting for the covid situation to get better so we can start rehearsing and playing shows.
