Questions on the Go: Culted

From the icy expanse of the Canadian prairies to the Nordic coast of Sweden, industrial blackened doom collective CULTED have long been innovators of creating music remotely, transcending both literal and metaphorical boundaries for over a decade..

We got Michael Klassen to answer a few questions on the go…

Welcome, to Metal Digest!

Please describe the band in a single sentence.

Michael: “A lucid mystery, without gods and without the vehemences of illusion.” E.M Cioran

What’s your latest project and what are you working on right now?

Michael: Painstakingly assembling the next Culted full-length which is destined to be our most unapologetically bleak and uncompromising sound. There is something detached and god-like about it.

How do you want people to feel when they listen to your music?

Michael: Like a smile that surveys annihilated landscapes.

Major influences: Who put you on this path?

Michael: Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Swans, Neurosis, Throbbing Gristle, Darkthrone, Celtic Frost, Dead Can Dance.

If you had to flee the country as a band, where would you choose to live?

Michael: Antarctica counts, right?

What’s the ‘wow factor’ that makes YOU decide which songs to keep, record and release?

Michael: It’s a feeling, like a pleasant earworm or goosebumps from the divine.

What’s the most hilarious band memory you can think of?

Michel: The fact that we’ve never met one another in person is ridiculous.

What would be the title of the band’s biography?

Michael: A short history of decay.

What’s the next milestone you’d like to achieve as a band?

Michael: To get us all in the same room, have a pint, and philosophize with a hamm…

I mean, get hammered drunk.

Until we meet again,
