The internet is responsible for many things; but advances in internet speed and a wider global connectivity has led to musicians meeting and forming bands worldwide that otherwise would never have been able to cross paths. One such band is Κραυγή (pronounced Kravgi); formed from one half of Greece and one half of Brazil the black metal duo have released their eponymous debut EP.
What the listener gets here with ‘Κραυγή’ is an EP without any pretention; it does what it says on the tin, there is no piss-arsing about with grandiose arrangements, expensive productions or chancing at a big American market. This is an EP that keeps it massively real, just from listening to the five tracks here, it is clear that these two are huge fans of the second-wave of black metal and therefore, this is an EP by black metal fans, for black metal fans and bollocks to the rest. This is an integrity that cannot be bought, it is cultivated and nurtured within the scene and ‘Κραυγή’ is the rawest of the raw. In fact, this EP is so raw, it may even still be alive, cut into it and it bleeds black metal as tracks such as ‘The Miracle of Life’ and ‘Scream’ stand tall as tremolo picking, blast beats and gurgling vocals swim about in a tin-can production which best reminds the listener why they fell in love with the genre in the first place.
There isn’t anything here that will appeal to those who don’t like that old-school black metal sound; but for those already well versed in it, ‘Κραυγή’ offers something new and exciting through an old-school vibe that will not disappoint.
