When it comes to cult bands from Spain, Reina Negra are definitely a band which fit that bill. Formed in the early 80’s, the band didn’t quite see the decade out before they split with members dissipating into other bands, most notable of which is Fuck Off. It has been over 30 years since Reina Negra disbanded, but most of the band’s work has now been placed on the recent ‘Aquelarre’ compilation.

For heavy metal fans who want to dig beneath the mainstream and then dig even further, peeling back the scab and going directly into the wound then ‘Aquelarre’ is a nugget of gold. ‘Aquelarre’ is a snapshot into the past, capturing a band in the heavy metal trenches and fighting for survival. This does mean that all the usual metal clichés apply, but there is also a touch of Barón Rojo here, particularly with the vocal delivery of Pep Casas who commands the stage like a heavy metal El Cid. However, as is expected with recordings of this nature, the tracks are not the greatest quality and the live tracks do feature far too much meandering that can be difficult to take in during one sitting.

This isn’t a compilation for everyone and its appeal is rather limited to hardcore metal aficionados with a particular interest in the Spanish heavy metal scene in the early to mid-80’s. It is good to have these works available but does it have scope for the average metal punter? Nah.
