The career of Betrayed has been one of stops and starts. Formed in the very late 80’s, the Chilean thrash metal band released their debut album in 1990 before splitting up and reforming several times. More recently, the bands career has been a little more fruitful delivering two consecutive EP’s ‘Looters Will Be Shot’ in 2016 and ‘The Unbeliever’ the following year. This year has both those EP’s combined into one compilation for worldwide consumption, confusingly also under the title of ‘The Unbeliever’.
What this means is that Betrayed have an extra chance to get their work out to the world; the combining of the two EP’s is wonderfully packaged and shows that these Chilean thrash veterans have so much more offer than just one album 30 years ago. Sure, there isn’t anything here that the listener will not have heard before and ‘The Unbeliever’ hardly breaks the thrash metal mould; but if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. There are some great tracks here with ‘Looters Will Be Shot’ being a particular highlight with a chorus so rousing you’d expect it to have been released by Exodus in 1987.
‘The Unbeliever’ is a heap of thrash metal nostalgia, it reminds the listener why they love the genre in the first place but without stretching beyond its means. This compilation demonstrates that the creative juices are free flowing in the Betrayed camp and with this in mind, it’s high time that a sophomore album was released!
