Let’s just immediately open it up and state fact. Ronnie James Dio is a true heavy metal legend, not only did he front Rainbow and Black Sabbath as well as his own band, but the man also racked up several albums that are consistently ranked high in the best heavy metal albums of all time. Unfortunately, due to the little man with the big voice no longer being without us, live releases are all we have left available and this year has Dio re-releasing their 2006 live album ‘Holy Diver: Live’.

Obviously, ‘Holy Diver: Live’ is not something that has been totally unavailable in the past and was first released back when Ronnie James Dio was still amongst us. However, this re-release does mean that the album has been giving the once over with a remastered sound and a new (and much better) cover art. This album captures Ronnie James Dio, Doug Aldrich, Scott Warren, Simon Wright and Rudy Sarzo in all their live majesty smashing through ‘Holy Diver’ in its entirety before delving into Rainbow/Sabbath and Dio classics such as ‘Gates of Babylon’, ‘Heaven and Hell’ and ‘We Rock’. Sure, Dio’s voice here is a little ragged around the edges, but even at its most flawed it is a powerhouse that delivers something utterly magical.

..the closest you’ll get to hearing Dio live once more.

There are plenty of live Dio albums available, but ‘Holy Diver: Live’ is certainly one of the best. It portrays Dio doing what Dio do best and whilst the crowd interaction has been edited out; this album may just be the closest you’ll get to hearing Dio live once more.
